HELP WITH SEARCHES
We have designed the search engine used to locate items of interest within our database to be easy to use both for general searches and more specific requests. If you require further information about any item you locate in our database you should contact the owner/supplier/artist directly using the details as displayed. Artlook.com levy no charges for use of the site but it would always be helpful when contacting suppliers if you mentioned that you found their details on our site.
Basic Searches
Typing an entry in the top Search box only will use
the word or (words) to locate specific items where that word (or
words) appear in the database entry. Searches are not case sensitive
so PIPER, Piper, piper are all treated identically.
For example:
This search will
show all items where the word Piper appears anywhere in the database
record for a specific item. The result will include entries where
the word appears within the artist or creator name, the title of
the item, the medium, the general description of the item.

| You can combine several
words in this box to improve the accuracy of your search. This search
will show all items where the words PIPER and FLOWERS and BLUE appear
anywhere in the database record for a specific item either within the
artist or creator name, the title of the item, the medium, or the general
description. Only records where all the words are present will be displayed
as the result of the search. Separate each word in your search with a
single space. |

Enhanced searches
You can further refine your searches by using the Search Options, either
in addition to the basic keyword searches as described above or instead
of.
For example:
This search will return
all works by artists whose surname is PIPER where the item was created
after 1950 and where the advertised price is between £5,000 and £10,000
|

Used in combination
with the keyword Search, the example below will return all records where
the artist
surname is PIPER, the item was created after
1950, the advertised price is between £5,000 and £10,000, and
the word FLOWERS appears anywhere in the database record for a specific
item. Please
note that “Date” refers to the recorded creation
date for an item.
Search Again
If, having made a search, you wish to make another search using new
values simply click on Search on the results screen (where the thumbnail
images are displayed) to clear all previous entries. If you wish to edit
or amend your previous search values simply hit the Back button of your
browser to return to the original Search screen where your values will
still be visible.
If you are using the simple keyword search option you can change this
in the Search box at the top left of the results screen to search again.
Understanding the results.
A search which results in matches from the database will show all such
matches with thumbnail images in a screen similar to that shown below:

The order in which items are
displayed is determined by their “rank”.
The highest rank is 1 and it descends in decimals thereafter. The ranking
system is intelligent which means that where a keyword search for PIPER
is made the search engine will assign a higher rank to entries where the
artist’s name is PIPER but a lower rank to entries where the word
PIPER appears somewhere in the general description of an item.
At the bottom right of the results screen you will see information about
how many items were found and, where the number of items exceeds the
display capacity, you will see page navigation options thus:

| Beneath the thumbnail
image you will see the artist’s name, the
title of the item, the price of the item (if available), the owner or supplier
of the item, the ranking of the item within the displayed results. Clicking
on the owner or supplier of the item will open a new screen giving the
relevant contact details.
Getting more information about an item
To see the details and a larger image for any item displayed on the
results screen simply click on the thumbnail. In addition to the information
displayed on the results screen this screen will also show the medium
and any general description of the item if available.
